Typical Issues

There are some very common issues that we diagnose often:

  • Low Refrigerant – The only way to have low refrigerant is if it leaks out. It’s important to find the source of the leak and determine if it’s in a location that can be patched.
  • Bad Capacitor – Capacitors are similar to batteries in that they store energy. These can wear out over time and often when we have lightning storms in the area we see an increase in replacements.
  • Clogged Drain Lines – As your unit removes the humidity from the air, it causes condensation to build, which is then drained out through the drain line. Slime can build up over time and clog the drain. Every inside unit should have a drain safety switch which shuts the unit off when the line is backed up, preventing water overflow and potential damage to your property. This becomes more common in the humid summer months.
  • Failing Fan Motor – The fan motors are responsible for pushing the air through your vents and exhausting the hot air from your condenser. These are mechanical components that can fail for a variety of reasons and your system will not function without them.

What can you do?

There are a few things you can do to extend the life of your system:

  • Check your air filter monthly and change as needed. Clogged air filters can cause the unit to literally freeze up, forming ice over the coil and preventing airflow.
  • Ensure the Outside unit has plenty of airflow. Be sure to keep bushes and debris away from outside unit and do not build privacy fencing or overhangs too close.
  • Sign up for a preventative maintenance plan. We can check the components twice a year and treat the system to help reduce clogging or other preventable issues.
